What Does It Cost to Replace a Wheel Bearing in 2026?

The Short Version

  • β€’Replacing one wheel bearing typically costs between 2,500 and 6,500 kroner fully fitted, depending on the car model and how much work is involved.

You first notice it as a faint hum at forty kilometres per hour. Then it becomes a steady, grinding drone that rises with your speed and often changes when you turn. That's the sound of a wheel bearing on its way out, and it won't go away on its own.

A wheel bearing is the small ball bearing assembly that lets the wheel spin freely while supporting the weight of the car at the same time. When it starts to fail, it becomes noisy and eventually dangerous. The question is simple: what does it cost to get it fixed?

What the Job Actually Involves

The mechanic lifts the car, removes the wheel, and unbolts the brake caliper, brake disc, and usually the steering arm and wheel hub. On many cars, the bearing is press-fitted into the hub and must be removed with a hydraulic press. A new one is then pressed in, everything is reassembled, and the wheel is torqued to the correct specification.

On some cars, the wheel bearing is integrated with the entire hub as a single unit. In that case, the whole assembly is replaced, which is quicker to bolt in, but the part itself costs more.

Expect one to three hours of labour per wheel.

What It Typically Costs in 2026

The wheel bearing or hub assembly itself costs from around 800 kroner to well over 3,000 kroner, depending on make and model. A Toyota Corolla sits at the more affordable end. A four-wheel-drive or a German premium car will quickly push the price up.

Hourly rates at garages vary considerably across the country, typically from 900 to 1,800 kroner per hour. Add parts and labour together, and you'll usually land somewhere here:

  • Standard passenger car, one wheel bearing: 2,500 to 4,500 kroner fully fitted.
  • Larger or more complex car: 4,500 to 6,500 kroner.
  • Both sides at the same time: often significantly cheaper per side, since much of the disassembly work overlaps.

A worn wheel bearing is one of the things that can result in a mandatory defect at the vehicle inspection carried out by the Norwegian Public Roads Administration. In that case, it must be fixed before the car can be approved.

What Affects the Price

Three things determine most of it. The car model dictates how expensive the part is and how easy it is to access. The hourly rate determines what the labour costs. And how much else needs to be removed along the way determines how many hours it takes.

On a car where the ABS sensor is integrated into the bearing, it also needs to be disconnected and reconnected correctly, otherwise a warning light will come on in the dashboard.

Sometimes surprises come up. A rusted bolt that snaps, or a steering arm that turns out to be worn once everything is already disassembled. NAF has useful guides on common car ownership and maintenance if you want to read up before you book.

How to Collect and Compare Quotes

This is where the real savings are. Two garages in the same city can quote the exact same job with a difference of several thousand kroner, because hourly rates and parts markups vary.

Describe the job once and request no-obligation quotes from several garages in your area, and you'll see the price difference in black and white. Tell them which car you have, which wheel was humming, and ideally when the noise started. That way you get comparable prices instead of having to ring around yourself.

It's free and non-binding, and you choose whichever quote suits you best in terms of price and timing.

Questions to Ask the Garage

  • Is the price inclusive of VAT and parts, or do those come on top?
  • Are you replacing the bearing itself or the entire hub assembly?
  • What happens to the price if something breaks during disassembly?

Is It Worth Waiting?

No. A wheel bearing only gets worse, and in the worst case the wheel can develop play or seize up entirely. At that point, we're talking road safety, not just comfort.

It's better to go in for a check as soon as the hum appears. Then collect a couple of quotes, compare them, and get it sorted before the noise grows into a truly expensive bill.

Prices and terms vary between garages and car models. The figures here are indicative for 2026.
